On the fourth evening of our stay in Memphis, I fell onto my bed, dead tired. The day had brought a whole wealth of new experiences, and Alma had not left my side for a moment.
Together we had visited the mighty temple of Ptah and the sanctuary of the Apis Bull. As I have already mentioned, it is a peculiarity of the Egyptians to worship various animals as deities. Among them can also be found this holy bovine. Through a small window we were allowed to take a look into the stables of the Memphis bull and watch him during his afternoon walk in the courtyard of the temple.
But at the end of the day, I was not to enjoy my high spirits any longer. The gods had other plans for us, terrible plans. In some way we must have enraged them anew.
In the middle of the night I was jolted out of sleep by panicked screaming. I thought at first that my nightmares had returned, but that was not the case. The screaming came from beyond my tent.
Dazed, I dressed and staggered out into the open. There was a commotion in the camp, and here again, it seemed to me for a moment as if I had to relive that night of Timotheosâ terrible death.
In truth, however, the sight that presented itself to me was many times worse. Two slaves, who seemed to have made their return from the desert and appeared to be completely drunk, were just dragging a third fellow back into the camp. The manâs arms and bare chest were covered in bloody wounds.
He was barely able to stand on his feet, and he was screaming like a man possessed and flailing his arms. He and the other two fellows had come shuffling out of the desertâs darkness like hungry demons.
I hurried towards themâtogether with some slaves who were running from their own sleeping place. The terrible screaming must have roused them as well. They looked around fearfully and pressed close together. Certainly they believed themselves to be under the curse of the Pharaohs again.
I reached the three fellows dragging themselves from the desert, pushed one aside, and helped the badly wounded man make the last steps into camp.
To my horror, I realized that the wounded lad was Lurco, Faustinius's beautiful boy-toy and barber.
There was hardly anything left of the usually well-groomed ladâs everyday appearance. His long hair hung straggling into his forehead, he was bleeding from several wounds, and his gaze resembled that of a madman.
"Anubis," he gasped, "he came upon me, full of wrath! He threatened my life!"
He looked around in a hurry, which seemed to cause him new pain.
"We are all doomed to die," he moaned. "Our fate is sealed."
With these words he collapsed. I was just able to catch him and soften his fall somewhat.
The two fellows who had dragged him into camp were hardly in a better condition. They too fell to the ground, crying for water and howling that the god of the dead was personally claiming their lives.
